transmission fluid

i was wanting to put some royal purple tranny fluid in my 02 2.4L , how would i go about doing this? there is no dipstick in the engine bay and the manual says to have someone else do it. should i just let my mechanic do it, or is it something i can do myself?

Re: transmission fluid

There is what looks to be a drain plug on the front of your tranny. When you take this out some fluid should run out. This means that your tranny fluid is up to level.

Re: transmission fluid

Drop the pan and change the filter and fluid like you would do with any other GM transmission. There is a specific procedure for checking the level but you can do it yourself. (I'm assuming auto tranny). I think the engine has to be running when you take out the plug. Probably best to get the service manual or maybe someone here knows the procedure.

Re: Re: transmission fluid

Hey I just found this thread and Ive been asking this question for a while. How do you check the fluid and what type of fluid goes in it? I have an 03 cavalier but I bought it used so there is no manual to tell what type of fluid it gets or how to check it. Would the procedure of pulling the plug out at normal temp. be the same for an 03??

Re: transmission fluid

Usually the trans dipstick says on it what type of trans fluid to use.

Re: Re: transmission fluid

yeah but this car has no dipstick it is the sealed tranny or whatever it is called. However I called my GM dealer and they said it takes just regular fluid.

Re: transmission fluid

Look under your car and about a few inches above the pan there is a bolt, on the front of your transmission, you remove it and transmission fluid will shoot out if it is full. However your car has to be level and you have to let it run for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. I just drive it around the block a few times to heat it up a little. I forget the size of the bolt but I know it is smaller than 1/2 inch.

Re: Re: transmission fluid

It is better than regular tranny fluid I guess, but I think it is supposed to be used for manual shift transmissions. I heard it makes it shift quieter a more smooth.

Re: transmission fluid

The Royal Purple Max ATF and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF both exceed your GM Dexron III requirements. They are just like synthetic motor oil, more uniform don’t break down lube better etc. It’s cheap insurance against needing a trans rebuild as soon. Go for it!

Yes. Great for auto transmissions. When I need to replace the trans fluid in the cavalier I will be using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

Factory fill from many German manufactures is Synthetic “lifetime” ATF fluid.
