Replacing water pump on 98 Taurus Wagon

To anyone who has replaced a water pump on a 98 Taurus: is this a major undertaking for a novice mechanic or is it one of those real pain-in-the-ass jobs? The water pump looks hard to get to, buried under belts and hoses.
