car won't start

My Grand Am won't start this morning. It is garaged and full of gas but when I turn the key I hear clicking and nothing else. Also I can't put it into neutral to even get it out of my garage. What can I do ?

Sounds like your battery is dead.... Have you tried to jump start it???

Could also be a bad starter, the clicking you hear is the starter solonoid engaging the starter gear to the flywheel, but the starter motor isn't turning it.

Could be because there's not enough juice to turn it, or that the starter just went out.

Do you have the key in the "ON/RUN" position when you try to put it in neutral??? If so then you might have more serious probs. then the starter to worry about.

What year and engine do you have?

I would try to jump it but can't get it out of the garage. I do have a charger hooked up now. The car is a '98 and the engine is a 3.1 V6. I am still confused as to why it won't go out of park. I have tried the key in several positions. Would the power door lock actuator cause this problem. I have been having some problems with part and haven't replaced it yet?

Is there any power to the inside of the car... Lights, dash, anything on in there. There is a lock that prevents the shift lever from moving if the key is off, its electrically controlled. Does your car have a spot next to the shifter for what looks like a key to fit into. Some cars have that as sort of an manual overide so you can move the shift lever without any power.

You should disconnect the battery while charging, just incase you have a current draw somewhere... that'll prevent the battery from charging as it'll drain it as fast as its getting charged.

While you're disconnecting the battery, make sure the terminals are clean as well.

Worst case, you could allways jack up one of the front tires with a wheeled floor jack and then wheel it back. Just be real careful if you do that.

Have you checked all your fuses to make sure none are blown, I'm not sure if the shift lock is ran through a fuse or not, but you should check them just to rule them out.

Thanks for your help ! I put a new battery in it and it started right up. I am thinking the old battery just wouldn't hold a charge since it didn't charge up on the charger after a few hours. Thanks again.
