1985 Oldsmobile, what to do, Ohio anyone?

Hello fellow Oldsmobile owners. I just inherited a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
coupe. I am picking the car up on the 28 but understand that it has a 5.0L V8 with only
40,000 on the engine. (great grandmothers car) I have about 1500 hundred to put into the
car right now and would like to make it a little quicker. What suggestions do you have as
far as parts, who to buy them from, and what order to purchase them in. My primary
concern is how it sounds and adding a little spend to the car. P.S. Does anyone live in
Cincinnati Ohio and know someone who does engine work on the side and would be
willing to cut me a great deal on the install? Thanks Joe

well, with 1500, i would put dual exhausts myself, although that would probably take most of your money and probably more than all of it if you get it done in a shop, try an intake of some sort, im sure it is throttle body or a carb, so try an open air cleaner, that is if you have one of those big somewhat circle ones on the top of your motor.

what kind of dual exh are you running that cost $1500, how about $40*2 for two flowmaster 40 series, maybe $30 in chome tips, about $150 for some decent headers, and $200-250 to have a shop bend the pipes and weld them up and do away with the cats.

How about to make it go faster you add an aftermarket intake like an Edelbrock preformer or RPM 'WITH' an open air element ( like someone else aready said ) how about changing out the cam for a higher lift and longer duration, what about using flattops pistons and shaving the heads for increased compression? What about changing the rear gears and/or adding a stall convertor?

You can get most of this off ebay cheap,
E-brock intake - $50-175
cam and lifters - $50-200
open element - $30
flattops - $175-250
head job ( plus shaving heads ) $100-200
stall convertor - $200-500

Cam and Carb would be cheapest go-faster changes. Find a 442 exhaust in a junkyard or get new parts. Might be fun to find a 75-76 donor cutlass and get the 350 engine and trans to swap in. 350 trans will need a new rear trans support though, although engine would be easy and car would be cheap. 77 350's were lightened up and suffer from other problems, ciking up, plugged oil drainback holes, cracked valve rockers. Also use Texas based oil, no Pennsylvania. And as you near 90K count on changing the timing chain and gears and probably the rod bearings.

"Also use Texas based oil, no Pennsylvania" Wow, that's a blast from the past. That may have been a factor 25-30 years ago, but the API certification has become so strict and hard to meet that it's no longer an issue where the oil is refined or produced. In fact, you'd probably have a hard time even finding out this information. Rest assured, as long as you stick with high quality, name brand oil, you're getting top notch lubricant.
