Dealer lost car keys

Hey

Unbelievable. My official GM dealer lost the car keys of my Yukon when it was in for service. They day after, they had the key replaced and ordered a new transmitter. The little key for the mid-console cannot be re-ordered so I'll have to do that myself with the spare keys. They'll reimburse me though... LOL. (The drive to the dealer costs more than $2 so no - thanks.)

After seeing "gone in 60 seconds" I'm now wondering for how long the Yuke will be mine...

Thanks GM, this is a perfect example of "Professional Grade"!!

--Is there anything I can do against this?--

Why should they reimburse you? I mean, why should you have to spend your own money to begin with, especially regarding a product of theirs? They should go make the spare key themselves, rather than making you do it and then ask for reimbursement.

How does a dealership "lose" a customer's car keys? Either come down hard on the last guy who had it (not to hard to figure out--I mean, someone had to drive your truck in/out of the service bay); or if no one admits to having it last, then assume that it was stolen and replace all the locks on your truck? Sheesh, car keys don't get lost all by themselves...

My dealer has lost my keys too, including the fob and my house key. I don't know how they do it but they do. I only give them the vehicle key when I go in for service now.

Lost keys do happen, but on rare occasions.
There are many different people who have posession of your keys at any given time..service advisor, porter, tech, cashier anything could have happened, keys misplaced, mistagged, fell on the floor under a desk in the cashiers office, service advisors desk..

My suggestion to anyone that is going to entrust keys to another person is to only give the specific key needed (door key and ignition) and make that one the spare.
I have seen many people bring in keyrings that have more keys on them than a jailers...... house keys, cars, safety deposit box.
Dealership employees are bonded and insured and on a very rare occasion (once in 22 years) have I ever run across an employee that had stolen something from a customers car ( a new porter who was immediately fired and turned over to law enforcement)

If the keys were lost, the dealer should replace them.

Re: Dealer lost car keys

Hi Just found this post. Have a similar problem myself. I took my Fiat ducato van to the main dealer for a recall and they lost my only set of keys. They are now telling me they will need to keep the van for a whole day while they change locks and change the ECU.

They have also said they cant fit me in for 3 days. this is crazy! They said if I was in a hurry I could try a a private auto locksmith they use. There site is Lost car keys - The Auto Locksmith

Has anyone used a similar service, are they trustworthy? Suerely Fiat should be sorting this out as a top priority????

Michael
