I am replacing the rear pads on a 95 Lumina. I cannot get the damn caliper to compress. I used the square caliper tool and it turned in a little ways and now it doesn't matter how much I turn it, it won't go in any further. Is there something special that needs to be done to these calipers?

calipers
my experience with them is this I have a 94 z34 which has the same deal, the corvette style pistons non compressable if it wont screw in together any more and it doesn't fit you might have to take it completely apart at-least thats what I did. took it apart and put it back together. but be patient because their is one hell of a metal o-ring that seems like it's not going to come off but it does good luck i hope i was able to help out...

Re: Compressing rear caliper - Lumina
Is it possible you turned the wrong direction, and backed it outta the bore? I've seen it done. If I remember right, I think one is counter-threaded. Maybe try running it the other direction, and see what happens?

Re: Compressing rear caliper - Lumina
ive got a 94 z34 with the same deal. i must agree with jeff, most likely you turned it the wrong way. and it is horrible to get back on... i was doing the same and turned them the wrong way and it just takes time, patience, and a little bit of effort to get them back on. try turning them the other way while pusing in to over come the spring... hope it helps

Re: Re: Compressing rear caliper - Lumina
Thanks for the replies.
I didn't turn it the wrong way but I did find out what to do. Loosen the emergency brake cable. Remove the brake cable from the caliper Remove the return spring. Remove the nut holding the cable arm. Compress the piston (I used a clamp). Put all the crap that was removed back on. This was written in a very obscure way in an old haynes manual. Quote:
