The Honda Service is requesting that I have my timing belt replaced simply because I have over 105,000 mi. on my Odyssey. This car is only 3 1/2 years old and it has so many miles on it because I commute 100 mil. a day to work. My question is has anyone out there ever had one break? If so, what was the exact mileage; Does it just cause damage to the timing belt or to the valves also? Also, I know that it is recommended to be replaced at 105K but, I had a chevrolet that had over 140K mi. on it and I never had to replace it's timing belt. I just believe and have always heard that Hondas are supposed to be so much better than Chevrolets and if that's the case, I don't think I need to have it changed right now, do you? I also drive under normal conditions, I live in the SE. I also have had no problems whatsoever with the van with regard to the engine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks. |

Re: 2001 Odyssey EX Timing Belt
Well first some Chevy's have chains that may be why you never replaced it.
Secondly Honda says if you do stop and go driving. Drive on dusty roads, Have a roof rack, or tow you aren't in normal driving conditions. And the big answer is Yes. All Hondas except passports are zero clearance engines. So you have a 50/50 change of not bending valves if it snaps. Why take that chance. |

Re: 2001 Odyssey EX Timing Belt
Wait a minute, Passports are non-interference? Which means my Rodeo 3.2L is as well? I've been unable to confirm if this is true or not, but have wondered for a long time.
Please share some proof if you know of some!

Re: 2001 Odyssey EX Timing Belt
The only proof i can provide you is that Honda sent out a service news telling the techs what models have zero clearance and it says all except passports.

Re: Re: 2001 Odyssey EX Timing Belt
(Scanning this forum in anticipation of purchasing a 2005 Odyssey and saw this question...)
DON'T mess around with timing belts! Regardless of what the mfr says, they should always be replaced between 60k - 90k miles! It's not worth it. I had a favorite car ('82 Volvo Turbo) ruined by a broken timing belt. Just my .02 ;-) Dan D current Ford Windstar POS owner Hopefully future Odyssey owner |

Well, you're correct that timing belts are not to be ignored. But, they've come a long way since '82!
I change mine when recommended, but luckily 2 of my 3 vehicles have non-interference engines, so even a broken belt won't cause engine damage. If you're looking for Odyssey info check out www.odyclub.com. The forum there is busy and there's already a section for 2005+ Ody's only. Take care,
