Computer/Internet Security

A friend and myself have had discussions about internet security, which is ,when you are off the internet, should you take out the cord in the wall. With firewire and other measures does it matter?Or is it a personal choice?

If you are not actually connected to your ISP then there is no way anyone could access information on your system. Cus if your not connected then your computer will not have an Ip address. And if your computer doenst have an IP address then its really not there. Fallow?

I think what you are refering to is a firewall. Firewire is the IEEE 1394

On kinda the same topic....I have an external modem. The guy that built our computer said to make sure I turn it off when I get off the internet. So if my modem is on but I am not "online" can someone still get into my computer?

Theoretically, someone COULD dial into your computer, if the modem was set-up to answer the call. Highly unlikely tho, and if someone did call, you would hear the phone ring anyways. Someone isnt going to be dialing random #'s with a modem, just to find out if ppl have a computer connected.

To summarize, I wouldnt worry about it. No one is gonna get into your machine that way. Its safe to leave the modem on.

What kind of external modem? A dial-up modem where you hear all those nice screeching noises when you connect? Or is it what he called a cable modem or DSL modem? If it is the Dial-up modem then HuMMerMan is right. Unless you are connected to your ISP someone CAN'T get in. Besdides most crackers don't bother trying to get into systems connected with dial-up access because they are slow, your IP address change all the time, and the way the modem works makes it very hard to get into. With all the broadband connections they will use their time getting into systems connected with DSL or Cable.

So, if it is a cable modem or a DSL router the if you are not using the internet go ahead and turn it off. But just remember people, if your computer is off "dail-up, cable, DSL, T1, or whatever" they CAN'T get into your system. That would be impossible.

Yeah, you don't have to worry. I would turn it off to save the power supply though.

I have a question: What does the Trojan Horse Anahkra (misspelled, can't remember now). I got in on my comp, and I don't know what it does. My (multiple) firewalls and virus scanners kept stopping it, but now its in a windows file that I can't delete. And it was dropped into my computer, the firewall warned me it was happening, that it was stopped. But after a few hours, the hacker go it in. So I formatted. Now its in again.

So, what does it do?

I would need to know the exact filename to tell you what exactly it does. But as all trojans it puts a backdoor on your system to allow people to get in. I could also release a boot virus and put itslef in the master boot record. So you may want to kill the hard drive and the master boot record.
