High output alternator
I would like to add a deep cycle battery and high output alternator to my truck to power my inverter. The stock alternator is rated at 100 amps. I would like to install a 200 amp or better alternator. Has anyone here done this, and can they recommend a brand of alternator that is compatible. 2002 blazer 4.3 Vin W.
Also any cautions or things to look out for. I plan on running double 1/0 AWG with fuse from the existing battery through the frame rails to the rear cargo area. 100 amp/hour battery securely mounted in the rear with an isolator and 1000 watt inverter. I would also like to put in a battery switch to bypass the isolator in case I want to use both batteries in parallel. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. |

Re: High output alternator
Wow what are you powering? something to remember about upping amperage. Voltage is inversly porportional to amperage. Upping amperage will drop your voltage. why dont you just get a series of capacitors? then invert the power to ac with a rectifyer?

Re: High output alternator
I like the idea of a two battery system for running the inverter so that in case I run the battery down I still have a spare battery with enough juice to start the truck. Unfortunately there is not enough room under the hood for two batteries, hence the battery box in the rear. It also can come in handy to be able to recharge a trolling motor battery without having to find an ac outlet.
One thing I'm not certain about is something that I read about high output alternators. It said that at idle a high output alternator will not give you more power than a regular alternator. That you would need to install a larger alternator to get the higher recharge rate at idle. I need to be able to recharge the battery at idle in the minimal amount of time. http://www.alternatorparts.com/Extre...144%20type.htm http://www.4alterstart.com/pages/sto...om/alternators Last edited by hunter01; 01-28-2005 at 02:18 AM. |

Re: High output alternator
Hunter, there ars some replacement high output alternators that can be used as roadside welders when you need them. I don't remember who makes them, but they're sure handy to have when someone brakes something. If I remember correctly the prices weren't to bad either.

Do a google search there are kits to up amperage as well as single wire kits. The single wire kit is used with GM alts for Broncos for a more reliable charging system. Prices were not too bad.
