Is this worth it or not?
Hey everyone,
I've been searching for a Eclipse GST coupe for over half a year now and found a couple close enough to go check out. Turns out that they had too much problems to be worth buying. I found another from a dealership, but some guy bought it a few days before I could go there. Anyways, I'm down to two choices...one car I found basically 40 miles or so away from me that is a 98 silver gst w/ 33, 500 miles on it. It looks nice, came back with minor problems from the mechanic that costs about $500 to fix (i.e., mainly the mechanic added the 30,000 mile tune-up which he says costs $400). The seller wants to sell the car to me for $9,400 which I know is above the bluebook value (good condition is $8,650 and excellent condition is $9250). This gst has a small dent, bottom of front bumper is a little scratched from drive ways and speed bumps. Otherwise the car looks fine. Oh, and another thing...the car is an automatic. Which I can live with, but I'll have to add more mods to get it faster. I'll sure miss manual though. The second choice is going 300 miles or more, which is basically where I start finding other GST listings from private sellers and dealerships. I found a manual 99GST that is selling for $9,995 from a dealer. It'll probably cost me an extra grand or so on top of that with the fees/tax to buy the car from a dealership as opposed to a private seller. If I choose the second choice I would have to wait two more months till spring break to travel and pay for a new clutch in my current car. What do you guys think? Also, I live in CA so the average price for a gst will most likely be above bluebook value due to how rare they are and their popularity.

When your talking around 9 grand. Buy what you want. If you want a manual dont settle for an a/t. 9 grand is 9 grand. You could find a 97 cheaper that is the same car. You could prob. even a get a 97 GST spyder for cheaper then 9 grand easy. Check every where...dsmtuners.com is very good though. Check on e bay too of course. Dont buy something you really dont like, youll regret it soon. I could see if it was a cheap 1500 1g and you said you would settle for an a/t but miss manaul. Nine grand is a whole diff story..buy what you want and you will have no regrets.//////// search search search
PS)))some of the fastest dsm's are a/t's

Re: Is this worth it or not?
Thanks for the advice. I have been looking around. Today, I found a 98 GSX!!! But...the price is sky high...$14,699. Too much for my budget. I'll continue searching, but I'm running out of time. If I do get the automatic one then I'll just have to add more mods to get it faster. Just a few more steps, but it'll be worth it.
Oh, and I don't trust buying a car over eBay...internet auctions aren't the best way to buy a car and I'd have to inspect it before I buy one.

Re: Is this worth it or not?
Just cause it's an auto tranny doesn't mean you have to spend more to get it just as fast as a manual !!!!! Your times will be alot more consistent if you ever get your 1/4 mile and 0-60 timed....
I definately agree with LouieAWDTSi... have some patience and shop around... are you hell bent on a 98-99? if you don't mind the older 2gen (95-96) body style... same car as 97-99 just small difference with fr & rr bumper.... I know the eclipses are like really hot chicks but don't grab the first one(s) that come along... te he he

Re: Re: Is this worth it or not?
I found a lot of gst spyders, but I don't want a convertible since it would mean more expensive insurance coverage and more chances of theft since it has a soft top. I've seen a couple of convertibles with slashed/broken soft tops around here. Also, I like the sunroof on the coupe's. I don't necessarily have to have a silver gst or gsx. Actually, I prefer a white one over silver. I'm currently negotiating with the seller to lower the price and looking for other cars at the same time. My current car is going to need a new clutch soon and it's not worth it to replace the clutch/flywheel so I'll be needing another car ASAP. I commute to work and school. And yes, I know it is my choice and I've been searching for a while now (over half a year). I like the 98-99 body style more than the older styles. Oh, and the current Eclipse I'm looking at isn't the first one I've seen. Like I said before I've been searching for over half a year now. Thanks for the comments guys!

Re: Re: Is this worth it or not?
Thx for the help. It seems GSTs and GSXs are going for more than bluebook value in CA. I found a few more sellers, which I'm currently negotiating the price with. I'll most likely have a GST within a week.
