F-150 starting problem (tough one!)

I have 1990 F-150. When I start it cold, it starts just fine and runs just fine. But, when the engine heats up, and I turn it off, it won't restart,(starter does crank) until the engine temp cools down (about 45 min). Possible electrical problem? Fuel problem? Ignition?
Any ideas?

I had the same problem. Thought it was the starter overheating. I removed it and went to parts store that was out of stock I reinstalled the old starter and installed a new neg. batt lead. Have not had another problem since and its been 4 months. Good luck

For some reason, I don't think it is the starter, because it is always cranking over, but the engine doesn't start. Even when the motor is hot, the starter cranks.

Check fuel pressure.Could be a fuel pressure regulator.

I had the same problem with my 91, I swear it's your ignition module, pop it off get it tested, they it'll get hot and fuck up, mine did, sounds like it to me.

If this has the TFI module on the side of the disty, that thing is known to go out. Heat is the issue. Not sure what years, but there is/was recalls on them. (Ford garage might not admitt such a recall exists.) I'd also suggest NOT installing a used one unless one is available just to test out. If testing with a used module, I'd replace with a new one after you think it took care of your hot starting problem and before the used test unit does the same or worse on you at the worse possible time.

If this has a disty and no TFI module on it, or is a disty-less ignition, I'm not sure what to tell you for narrowing it down.

Do come back and let us know what was found or further info.

Your symptoms describe exactly what my truck did. It was a coolant temperature sensor. When your engine is warmed up, and the sensor is faulty, it thinks the engine is to hot. Its cheap and easy.

I had the same problem with my 300 6cyl try replacing your Coolant Temp. Censor. I know it dont make sense but trust me the same exact problem stumped me for a while but its a fairly cheap part if i remember right its about 20 dollars

This is an old post, but I'll answer anyway. It's either the coil or the stator. You can't really test these components unless you catch them in a dead(non-running) state. If you test them in a live (running) state, they will test good anyway. So you pretty much have to go trial and error. So try the coil first because it's cheaper and easier to replace. If the coil doesn't fix it go with the stator. You have to remove and disassemble the distributor to replace the stator. The ignition module on the side of the distributor also goes dead, but when it dies it is dead for good.
