95 gas milage improvment

i have a 1995 4X4 4dr LS vin code "W" with 187000 miles. i've been having REALLY bad gas milage lately. around 11 mpg. well i took off the front of my air box today, just to see if i would get any improvments in HP. i also have always had a K&N air filter in there(was there when i bought the car). well after doing that, i can hear the air getting sucked in faster, and also, my stock muffler is louder. it has a louder roar and rumble. didnt bother me too much at all. but my gas milage went up amazingly much. it shot all the way up to 18-19 mpg. i never thought that by just removing the front of the air box, i would get an extra 7-8 miles more a gallon. that is amazing to me.

With complete respect intended, there is no feasible excuse for that big of a difference.

If you want, you can cut a larger portion of the plastic out but keep the outer ring so it will keep the filter firmly in place.

Ye olde ghetto airbox mod. I am guilty of the same - cutting the bottom out and leaving the "ring" of plastic to allow for the air filter to be sealed properly when you close the clips.
