warning on in tank feuel pumps

i bought a sierra classic new in 2000 at about 33,000 mi. it died going down hill with a full tank. i had it towed home. it was'nt getting spark or fuel.found out that the same fuse takes care of the fuel pump and the ecm. when i pulled the pump out i found that the two wires going to the pump had gotten hot enough to melt the insulation and short out. had i jumped the fuse i could have blown the truck up! also the altenator went at 39,000 and ihad to replace both lowe ball joints at 43,000 mi. besides this it runs and rides good.
