Unhappy overdrive

I have a 1994 t-bird. It has overdrive. It slips all over itself. I hear that there is a computer chip in the tranny that could be causing the slipping. i have called around about a diagnosis and the prices are off the wall. is there a way to ( cheat) the diage and do it yourself. can anyone help??????
