96 Ciera SL

My daughter has a 96 Olds Siera. Don't ask me much more about it than that. Several times now it won't start for her. We have had it towed into the local shop and the first time it started right up after they got it there. It didn't start for them at our place. So they didn't know what the problem might have been. They cleaned the battery posts and grounds.

Next time they wiggled some wires and it started (after the tow). They had no idea which wire if any was the one that caused it to start.

We know now that when she turns the key on the check engine light needs to come on. The rest of the dash lights come on but if the check engine light is not on all it will do is turn over and over.

The next time the found out that if the computer in it is not properly grounded the check engine light would not come on. I think they found that info out on the web. So the took the dash out to get to the computer and found some wires hanging down. They made sure that the computer was well grounded and of course, it started. They said that maybe the cold damp weather we have had might have something to do with it.

Well, today the check engine light would not come on when she truned the key and sure enough it wouldn't start. She tried several times and nothing. Then left it for about 5 min and then it started right up. That was a first for her. Most of time she ends up having it towed.

It started the rest of the day. Ya, there was freezing rain this morning but the car is keep inside. OK, so the garage door is left open all the time. She did notice that when she turns the key on, the check engine light comes on. That is a good thing. Then as she turns the key the rest of the way to start it, the check engine light blinks. She doesn't know if it has always done that, if it should do that or if this is something new. In any case, it did start each time the rest of the day.

She was late for work again this morning and was in tears when she called me. This is getting old for her and our local garage doesn't know what else to try. One of you must have an idea what the problem is. They said we could try replaceing the computer but that is an expensive thing to do if we are not even sure that is the problem. If we replace that and still have the problem that wouldn't be any fun for her either.

So what do you think? If you want to send me a reply at
[email protected] that would be great.

Thanks for the help.

Sheldon

Re: 96 Ciera SL

Ask someone to make sure the male and female pins for the ig module are making good contact at all times.
