something interesting the dealer told me
My security light has been coming on and then won't allow the car to start so I took it to the dealer and they said it needs a new cylinder and lock and ignition switch. They told me that once the new lock is put in it needs to be programed. They want $510 to do this but he gave me a little tip. He said that once the part is in all you need to do to program it is, hook up a battery charger to the car, turn the ignition to the on position adn leave the car for about 30 min and the car will program the new igniton. The new part is $330 dollars, man what a chunk. I can't affor to have them do it so I'll have to give it a try.

Re: something interesting the dealer told me
There's a little more to it than what I previously wrote. I went to chevy talk and mr GM-Tech gave me these few pointers:
Those prices sound a bit high. As for the learn procedure... it's a little more involved than what they told you, but not difficult. Here's the real procedure to do a manual relearn of the theft deterrent... -------------- 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start). 3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes (the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK). Important The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password). |

You don't have to change the entire ignition housing only the ignition lock cylinder should be less than $150 although it will need to be coded to you key, most parts departments will do this for free or a nominal fee. then you can just follow the instructions in teh previous post to relearn the new cylinder

I have been doing that proceedure for the last two months and My wife and I are sick of it. The dealer said it sounds like an ignition switch? He said they would charge me $70 to find out. I lold him to just do the Recall work to my 02 Impala (free). I am out of warranty. Where can I have the work done cheaper than the dealer? Last edited by Shadetreeme; 02-10-2005 at 03:30 PM. |

I know I'll need help. Do you have the part number for the cylinder? I am needing this done before the car won't start at all. My buddy has a malibu and his car wouldn't start at all, the security light came on and the car would crank but not start. He did a relearn procedure and that fixed his issue all together. |

Well what year is your impala...i mean i'll give you the part numbers off of my 2000 monte since the ignitions are all the same.. i reccomend you buy the switch form www.ac-direct.com ...their prices are really cheap the dealers wanted 120 and 140 for the switch and the cylinder....well i found ac-direct and their prices were 76.03 and 67.81...you will only need the cylinder since your key isnt jammed in there the part number is d147d which is what you will search for on their site...if you give me an email address in a private message.. i will send you an alldata diagram and instructions to help clarify how to do it...the recoding the lock is once you have the old cylinder out.. is taking off the brass cover carefully and pulling the pins one by one and putting them into the new cylinder and putting the cover back on the new lock...i've done alot of work on cars and its not a big job..just takes a little bit of patience
By the way these are genuine ac delco parts not come run of the mill cheap garbage that will break in 3 days |
