Dilemma...
I want a 5-Spd so bad i can taste it...anyways im gonna have a 40 Hour job for 6/hour. I might get this machine Shop job 8.5/hour 40 hr/wk and then ill have my parttime job...20 hours 6.2/hr..anyways...My problem is when Im gonna buy the used 5-Spd transmission most likely it will not at be at the place im gonna get it installed. So it will need it to be hauled to the Installers shop. Thats my problem I dont have a truck..my step-dad does but my parents dont want me to have a manual.(they insisted i learn on one though??) Plus I dont think taking the tranny out myself is gonna be the best idea...How much am I looking at for the junk yard to remove the Tranny and driveshaft? Also should i go ahead and have them rebuild the tranny? Thanks for all your help. Also if someone could PM me on how to get a picture in a signature that would help.

Re: Dilemma...
Call AAA and get them to tow it, say your tranny fell off in the middle of the road.

Re: Dilemma...
You don't have a buddy that could help you? Or you can just get a towel, put it around tranny, throw it into the trunk. Couldn't hurt anything too bad.

How much does the transmission weigh max? 200 lbs? Does it hurt the suspension to tow it with no driver? Does it hurt the suspension to carry a 200 lb passenger? I've removed about 150 lbs from the wieght of my car just for performance and it handled better and HASN'T damaged the suspension. +/- the weight your suspension will be fine; through the old tranny in the trunk and pay a wrecker $50 to tow it. They don't care why its being towed. Further you should be able to get a KA + 5 spd with cut harness and hoses for less than $200. If you want the engine too, just use your harness and hoses. If not just use the 5spd. You'll still need the correct ECU and the hydraulic clutch actuators/pedal assembly. I wouldn't imagine that a shop would charge more than $300 for the install if you had all the parts ready but that is just a guess. You could just buy 2-3 floor jacks for $100 and change it yourself though. Then spend the money you've saved on mods. The more I think about it you're probably better off to get a wrecked 5 spd 240 as a donor car or just sell yours and buy a 5 spd 240.

BTW: some salvage yards will let you remove parts on your own then go pay for them. This saves you quite a bit in money because most of your cost from many salvage yards is for the labor.
Concerning the cost of labor: say you make $8.50/hr, say it takes you 3 hours to do a particular task on your car where a garage could do it in 1. They'll still charge you probably $50 in just labor where as even if you had to miss work to fix the problem it would cost you $25.50. Since you'll be working in your spare time you'll save even more. If you want to hot-rod you'll need to develope those wrench skills. What better time than now? |

Re: Dilemma...
I would leave the auto ECU in. Gets around the speed limiters. You just have to do something about the park wire.

Hmmm...
Ok...I think i might have a friend who can tug my 5Spd around once I get it. Removing the Tranny myself could be a bad idea...how much would a Salvage charge me for removing it? I mean using a Jack and Jack stands and spending a considerable amount of time under the car..which will probably be on Grass and not concrete is not my idea of worth my life. What if the ground is soft and jact stand shifts and falls? yea bye bye me. Another thing doing the install at my house COULD BE REALLY BAD! not getting it done and my parents finding out? Holy cow man they would kill me..finding out that i was installing it when they told me i cant have a 5spd! Thanks for your guys input...Is there a Transmission Cooler in the 5Spd 240?

I hauled 3 transmissions in my hatch,(not at the same time), not more than 3 months ago and my suspension wasn't effected at all. My local pull yard charges $70.00 for a transmission and you gotta haul it out yourself. Its better if you drain the transmission yourself, that way you can check the magnet on the drain plug for any metal particles. Be careful of rebuilds. All it takes is one A-Hole MIT(Mechanic In Training) in a hurry to screw up a transmission. |

Re: Dilemma...
Three dry trannies can't weigh more than two fat dudes. And I'm sure Nissan engineered the suspension to withstand some pretty big people in the backseat. Shit I'm sure a full gas tank as opposed to an empty is quite a difference. Three trannies will be fine back there.
A wet tranny cannot weigh 200lbs. I give it 120 max.

Re: Dilemma...
Yep. You can imagine if you pull out a little plug full of metal shavings and such that it has seen either a lot of miles or a lot of douche bag.
A transmission fluid cooler is not needed on a manual tranny. Just change the gear oil. I wouldn't rebuild the tranny unless I was sure it was shot. And I can only think of two ways to tell. 1)Crack the sum bitch open. 2) Drive it. Usually its just syncros shot anyways unless its broken from something like too much power or a lot of shock(dumping the clutch or sidestepping). Even then U joints typically go first. KA trannies are pretty strong. Look at www.ka-t.org. If Duy and Rick can use one, anyone running a KA should be able to. Whats up with your parents man? My parents told me I should get an auto and I told I don't think so. So they said whatever, you'll get tired of it. You know the usual I'm older than you so that makes me smarter than you BS. Well I haven't got tired of it yet and I don't see a horizon approaching.

It was this way
It was this way get an Auto or no car...Iunno why they were all up and all about teaching me on a manual to ruin my dreams...by denying me access.
EDIT: I plan on Dynoing my Automatic and the 5-Spd just to see the differences. How safe will I be if I take it easy on the 5-Spd for the first 500 Miles? |
