1987 RX7 turbo

I'm going to check out a 1987 RX7 turbo 5spd trans, 178,000k miles, a clean body except for a dent in the rear quarter and a decent interior. The guy is asking 1600.00 for it and i want to make sure it is worth more than that. Is there anything i should be looking for on a rotary engine car with that kind of miles?

One thing about those turbos...they dont last long. Its probably about to go with the miles that things got. ! Rebuild !
But ask the owner more questions. Like if the car has overheated in the past, any problems with anything...how well the car was taken care of..etc.
I'd buy it if it werent for that 178k on the motor.

Re: 1987 RX7 turbo

For $1,600. even with the miles on it that's not bad.
You may get lucky and get over 200k out of the engine or it may have already been rebuilt, just ask what the maintenance schedule was.

At 178,000, my guess is, the motor was already replaced.

Re: 1987 RX7 turbo

I had about that many miles on one of my old T2's...It still ran very strong!

Its well worth it if it runs & looks decent...

Check for gas smell on the dipstick...Get a compression test...Also smell the oil cap...(for gas) A strong gas oder shows leaking injectors or bad compression, or both...Ask if it has ever flooded out...

Drive it...along time...through all conditions...
Then...shut her down, check it over well, look for leaking fluids, check the exhaust, an old clogged cat will really dampen the Turbo spirit...Then after 10-15 mins...
Just back In & restart her...Old wornout engines are hard to start and very hard to restart when hot...Does it blow smoke at start up? Or at WOT?

Let us know how it goes...
Good luck/skill!

Re: 1987 RX7 turbo

I wasn't saying I was the rule, but I have also known of quite a few T2's to go way over 100k miles...(Orig. engine & Turbo)

Of course some people don't take care of their cars, no matter what it is...
