Belt Squeal
97 SIERRA 5.0 4X4
When it's cold and after or during cornering, it sounds like my belt is squealing (LOUDLY). The belt seems tight enough and appears to be in reasonable condition. I'm wondering why it would do this only when and after turning the wheel. I was looking into replacing it and I saw you need to loosen the tension pully, but didn't say how. I see a nut on the pully I thought I'd throw it out there before I start wrenching on things. Thanks |

Re: Belt Squeal
The tensioner has a square hole in it for a 3/8 ratchet for relieving tension. More than likely this tensioner has siezed in place and is not working correctly. If you take the tension off the belt(without loosening anything) and the tensioner doesn't spring back. Then change the belt and the tensioner.

Re: Belt Squeal
I would agree the tensioner. how old is the belt, is it glased this will also let it slip. start the engine and take a look at the belt is it running smothly then have someone turn the wheel see if the belt starts to bounce around if it does its the tensioner

Re: Belt Squeal
I also thought it was my tensioner. i bought a new one and had the same squeal. i was told to get the good belt instead of the after market. i have not tried it yet.
