Front universal joints

Okay gang..

anytime I have my 4 wheel drive on, I get heavy thumping form the front end while turning and acclerating..... sounds like CV joints to me..

Well this weekend with all the snow, still ran the 4-wheel drive, and started getting a whinnning sound as well.. especially under braking, it sounded like I was dragging a caliper...

Took it into the shop yesterday, and I was informed that my transfer case was gone...! Installing a used one would $1,000.00... rebuilt, about $1,400.


Also, they charged me to tighten the front bumper, that is what they said was thumping.. right, tried the 4 wheel drive this morning.. still thumping..


neeless to say I have 170,000 on the vehicle, its been good to me, but this may be time to cut the cord...

so it sounds like CV joints, and a transfer case....before Iget hosed any more... anyone got some good ideas of cost and work involved????

Its that or maybe a new Envoy...

1000 for a used transfer case? Get another opinion.

Have you EVER had the fluids changed in the differentials and the transfer case?

Also, check your sway bar bushing and end links for the thumping.

hi,
these trucks are soo easy to work on once you find out the problem, and used parts at salvage yards are easy to find and CHEAP!!! i am car fixing retarded and i can usually figure it out on my own or with help from people on here prolly could have done the work yourself for 1/4 of the cost.

anyways do u have thumping in 2 wheel drive? and when u say thumping exlain more.

thumping only happens in 4-wheel drive...it definitely sounds like gears or the knuckle{?} jumping a notch...(does this make sense)

and the mechanic changed the fluid in the transfer case while he was there, said the seal had been leaking for a hwile.. (probably did not have any fluid in the first place!) I had not driven in 4-wheel drive in quite some time, but I think my son put about fifty miles on it this past Sunday, maybe with no fluid, it finally packed up???


What is the average cost of re amaufactured cv joinst and Transfer case any way..

I jave just ben on line, and found re manufactued case out in Ls Vegas for approx. $800. plus a $450 core charge.. not bad, considering my mechanic said eht cse alone was $1,400.00!!!!!!

I have done CV joints on my sons Mitsubishi GSX, and it wasa a pain cause they were pretty well rusted/welded into the front hubs.. nedded to go to a machine shop to be presse (hammered?) out.. can this be a reoccurance with the blazer as wll??

You need to get another opinion.

You probably have shot the front differential and the drive shafts have missing teeth.

Get a PROPER CHECK DONE!
