probe turbo

I was just offered a probe that is in a mechanic shop that keeps blowing head gaskets ,it is somewhere between a 92-94 4cyl. turbo. A friend of mine's family has some trans and mech shops and this guy walked in and said it kept blowing head gaskets they replaced it and it blew again.
The guy drove the car back in said he was tired of messing with the car and gave them the title. He offered it to me for $200.00. I haven't seen the car yet but it is mine now. Does anyone have any ideas what might be blowing the gaskets? I am thinking pull head and have it shaved and have valves done bolt it back on and see what happens. Any comments will be appreciated

Re: probe turbo

I talked to my friend last night and he said that the car was driveninto the shop it was just missing a bit and had some coolant in the cylinders I still haven't seen the car but he says it is in much better shape than my 89 probe lx both body and interior,so I hope its only the head gasket

Re: probe turbo

yea...nice car...I'll buy it from you....well if you fix the problem, that is. I would start with a new head completely.....the old one is probably all cracked up, large and small cracks...the head shop may miss them even if they're able to do pressure check(why? the head is not hot like in a running car). next have the block top checked thoroughly for warping and small cracks in it as well.(it happens on iron blocks, rarely). before you button up the head swap check the cooling system from top to bottom, if you see any corrosion or old stop leak residue(around the intake passages, thermo housing could be plugged!) clean it and replace the radiator(at very least have the rad. cored out), use new head bolts and try to find a multilayered steel head gasket if possible(honda uses these) not the cheap replacement autozone crap, this will ensure a better seal even if your new head decides to warp again from overheating or uneven cooling of the head from one side to the other(temp may read normal for the latter).....after you're sure cooling system is working fine...do complete tune-up,timing,and check to see that boost control solenoid, on and under turbo, is not stuck closed, and your boost stays under 15 psi max.(should be around 12-13 max usually)
