Angry abs on too much on early and crunching

hello, i have a 98 blazer and my abs is coming on too much and stays the abs sound stays on sometimes even when i dont have the brakes applied. no codes or lights on. and somes times if it comes on early if makes a loud crunching grinding sound that i ahve to push through the brakes to get it to stop. so all in all my abs comes on too much, too early, abs motor sound stays on too long, and sometimes effects the brakes, no codes, no abs light on. my brake pads are new, my abs terminals into the hubs are clean!

any ideas

Yea, the ABS is not active only when the brakes are applied and can still go on for a second or so after they have gone into action.

The crunching grinding noise is the ABS working.

Re: abs on too much on early and crunching

i know the normal abs sound works, but i am in a parking lot going 5mph and if i just tap the brakes it goes off. i have had my blazer for 3 yrs and it has never acted like this. and the crunching is way worse than normal. shit the abs sound goes off sometimes just by tapping my brakes a lil. u think its a relay? i know its not normal how it is!

When you are tapping the brake, is the front tires actually sliding due to the conditions being slippery or is this happening even without a loss in traction.

Thinking one of the speed sensors are screwed.

if its coming on when you don't have the brakes applied, it sounds like the system is going into "self test" which could be the relay or the power wire going to the system has an intermittent fault.

Re: abs on too much on early and crunching

This is something I would think about taking to the dealer to analyze. They can plug into your ABS computer and find the fault.

Also there was a recall on some component of the abs in my 96. It seems like they just put in a new wiring harness. I doubt this is your problem, but maybe the recall was designed to prevent something you got.

DONT MESS WITH THE ABS GO TO A DEALER AND HAVE IT CHECK OUT. It might be just a dirty front wheel speed sensor

Re: abs on too much on early and crunching

first i hate dealers they rip u off one bad!

ok this may help some people figure out my problem, i drove around today to see what is going on more.

it is to the point where everytime i stop it comes on. so its something telling it to come on every stop no matter the speed or anything. usually kicks in at about 10mph or less. my abs light came on and my brakes seemed normal again, but then on my way to ge the abs light code tested it went off and my problem was back. i hope this helps.

wheel speed sensor? where do i find that at on the blazer? my be a dumb ? but

thanks everyone
