hard disk recs

yo bitches. I'm typing from the girls laptop cause my hard drive decided to take a nosedive last night. Ive tried as much as i know to fix it to get running. it wouldnt boot at first, i tried fixing the mbr, tried booting off the windows cd, even tried formatting and reinstalling windows to no avail. I believe that the bitch finally bit the dust. It'll just freeze at random times. It's always given me dumb problems but this is the last straw. Its a seagate 60gig hd, and it has all my junk on it so i don't really want to format it. I was just thinking of biting the bullet and getting a new hard drive. Is western digital the 'best' hard drive brand out there? i just wanna avoid this stupid crap problem in the future. i can get my hands on a w. digital 60 gig ata100 for 65 bux which doesn't seem bad.

my comptuer: AMD..something 1500+ clocked at 1.3 gigs, 256 megs ram, geforce 4 ddr128 video and sound blaster live sound all on an msi something or other mb.

thanks.

Seagates are the most reliable so stick with them. The new ones evem come with 5 year warranty. Btw before you tash it make sure everything is conected right, heck even the power supply can cause erratic behaviour. Best it would be to try installing it into a differnt computer and see if it still exibits problems.

Also if you want to recoved your data try spinright 6 from www.grc.com

Re: hard disk recs

I've heard a lot of good things about Seagate. I haven't used them myself although my father uses them for his PC and his data storage is absolutely critical to his work. I've had great experiences with Western Digital though. All my drives are Western Digital and I haven't had any issues at all except for one drive that was about five years old and finally kicked the bucket. Otherwise I've been very happy.

I've known people to have issues with Maxtor drives though. It's a coin toss there - some have issues and others don't. I've known enough people with Maxtor problems though so I use Western Digital instead.

And Neutrino's right - I'd try SpinRight from GRC.com. The guy that runs that site is awesome and really knows what he's doing.
