tune ups/coil/stuff
Do any of you metro gurus know if its worth putting a new coil on,say a 100,000 volt high perf ? also what type of plugs do you recommend and any other stuff. I am losing some fuel economy and I am going to replace my clutch, thought I would do some major tuneup as well
Thanks, Joe |

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
Someone else will have to talk about whether a higher voltage coil is worth it, I tend to stick with OEM level replacement parts.
I give my Metro a tune-up once a year in November or December that includes: plugs (AC Delco), distributor cap and rotor, PCV value, air cleaner, ignition wires (if needed) and fuel filter (if needed). Oil (5w30) and oil filter is changed every 3K miles. Usually do an EGR cleaning and put a shot of injector cleaner in the gas tank at this time also. I still notice that mileage drops 4-5 mpg over the winter - I think due to the cold and additives used in the gas.

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
Lower fuel economy in the winter is also caused by longer warm-up times.

I personally use an MSD-Blaster SS coil (60,000 volt I believe). $40, works great, better throttle response, and a few more mpg. I also use Bosch Platinum +4 plugs. Some people argue they're crap, but I use them in all my cars, and I have had nothing but good things to say about them. And they will last longer than Iridum's. (100,000 mile warranty on Bosch Platinum).

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
Is there much to do as far as mounting or connections to drop in the MSD-Blaster SS coil?

Mounting is kinda a pain in the butt. Might have to drill a new hole or 2 in the firewall for the mounting studs(included). To hook it up, you cut the connector off where it went into the old coil, hook up the new eyelet connectors, and hook them up to the appropriate terminal on the new coil. A half hour job tops. It's worth it to feel how much more smooth the idle gets tho

Agreed! Alan has pix of his mounting job at his site, or at least he used to. there is a small pic at http://www.ssgti.net/main.htm it is kinda hard to see (Alan's was better) but you can get the idea!

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
Hey geozuki, good call on the plugs! I got the bosch platinum +2 's and now I idle great and throttle response is much better. Seem to have eliminated a lot of my problems.
Thanks again ![]() Now if I can just get the stereo problems worked out I might quit whining for a while ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Maybe we should all get you a new antenna, so you quit yer bitchin'. lol
Yea, those plugs are the best. There's better plugs for performance(Iridium), but, I like my plugs to last longer than a month. There's actually a HUGE difference between the +2, and the +4 plugs. The +4's are $6 a piece tho. But when you only use 3 or 4, no biggie.

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
Platinum plugs are awesome, as long as you don't live in Canada. There are additives in the fuel, not legal in the US, which will eat through platinum plugs in around 20-40k, no where near the 100k they claim. Such is life. I stick with my copper AC Delco or Champion plugs.

AHH! Damn, and I thought ethanol eating every rubber part of my fuel system was nasty. What do they add in the fuel? Molson Ice? Sorry, couldn't resist the Canada joke

Re: tune ups/coil/stuff
I couldn't tell you what is added, or maybe it's something that's not taken away. I'm not ENTIRELY sure that it's even the truth, or a rumor. But I've heard it from at least 4 different unrelated sources, and I do seem to have awfully bad luck with platinum plugs misfiring and going dead after only 20k or so.
