85 xj running issues

rebuilt carb,replaced plugs,wires...ran poor but ok for a day or so...sat over christmas and every since plugs continually foul with black almost carbon looking substance and smokes black smoke heavily like its burning REALLY rich...anyone with knowledge on how to fix this problem please help...oh it sat for about 3 and a half years before i bought it so i thought it could have been dead gas,but i put fresh gas in and no change.please help

mine did that for ever and i ajusted the idel and ran it pretty hard and it went away and i put in some gas treatment and sprayed out my throttel body

OUCH! 3yrs is long time for gas to go bad and then gum up your tank.You need to clean out the tank(even though you put new gas in,it just mixed it up better to gum up your carb. and filter)I know Ive had to do it to mine.and put a new gas filter in,who knows the filter alone might help but doubtful.Get a can of J.B. carb cleaner that you add to the tank,it helps if that doesnt try a 1/2 quart of type F tranny fluid to a full tank of gas.It has a high detergent level in it and will help clean your carb up on the inside where it is needed.But please try and clean the tank out first by removing it and dumping out(not on the ground) the contents and cleaning out the gunk and grime.
