I have a 2002 XLS 4x4. I have the 4.0 V6. I want to get rid of the clutch fan. It sucks in this cold to have it always running when it’s not needed. I am sure my vehicle would warm up 2 xs faster without it hauling freezing cold air into engine bay. It will also free up a little gas mileage, if I can eliminate this constant mechanical load. I am not having any heating or thermostat issues, but I think going to an electric or dual electric fan would be more efficient. I would appreciate any advice on how to go about doing that. I have no idea what devices are available to trigger the electric fan or where it is mounted to get a reliable temp reading. I would think mounted before the thermostat in the coolant would be most reliable.
I know most new vehicles have electric radiator fans. If there is a specific reason for the clutch fan I would appreciate the information, so I can abandon the electric fan idea. Thanks V |

I'm no mechanic, just the average guy who is too broke to take a vehicle to the dealer but what you're saying doesn't sound right. If your engine didn't need cooling, I can't imagine the fan would be running? If it is, wouldnt a faulty sensor somewhere be to blame? Not sure. Let me know what you find and in the meantime I'll do some homework

Re: Clutch Fan to Electric Radiator fan help?
The stock fan on the explorer is a clutch fan that is turned by a serpentine belt driven pulley. It spins all the time. It disengages when the vehicle accelerates and then the radiator is cooled by the flow of forced air.
