Unhappy whinning noise drivers side of engine?

i started hearing this whinning noise comming from the drivers side of the engine the last week and a half. its loud when i start my car in the morning, and when i drive it, it whines up so loud then i shift and it whines back up, etc... i just went to a shop to have them look at it one guy said it was a water pump and another guy said it was the pulley that runs the a/c unit ( im thinking its the tension pulley??). then they both said its probally that. they said i could just loosen it and take that belt off till i need the a/c. does that sound ok to do??

anyone have this problem before or now anything about this??

thanks for all feedback

Re: whinning noise drivers side of engine?

if you don't use the a/c then yah that would fix the problem and it is safe.
But, as long as there sure it's the a/c belt. It sounds to me like the alternator belt could be making that noise as well.

Re: whinning noise drivers side of engine?

hm weird, i'm thinking the alternator pulley...because it goes faster as the engine spins faster which = louder
