ABS and BAT light

Ok,Heres my situation.I was driving into town after a heavy snowfall, I was comming to a stop and the ABS kicked in.Shortly after that the ABS and BAT light popped on.Then went off a short time later. Then Came on again.Got back home and let car sit.The day after went to start car and all was good.Today i went out and it happened again.I was on my way home and decided to stop for a soda, pulled into gas station and while i was just barely touching the brakes i could hear the ABS unit running when it should'nt have been. Then the car died,as if the ABS was sucking all the juice from the bat.I had put a new alt. in it over the summer. So what i did was disconnect the harness from ABS unit and got a jump, and as soon as the cables were disconnected from the battery the car died.Does the ABS harness need to be connected to complete the charging circuit? I Dont think it's the alt,but i am going to have it checked at napa where it was purchased.Otherwise is is the ABS unit shot or could it possibly just be a relay?

Re: ABS and BAT light

There could be a short in the ABS circuit that is draining the battery but I would have to believe that the alternator is bad again. If you disconnect the battery and the engine dies once started it usually indicates that the alternator is not putting out any voltage. Also be sure to check the battery since it may have been drained to the point where it will need a recharge prior to starting the car. As far as the ABS unit, I don't think it is bad just not getting the voltage it needs to work properly. Post again once you get the alternator tested. Also clean the battery terminals and make sure you have a good connection at the alternator.

Re: ABS and BAT light

I would plug the abs back in as I doubt that there was a problem. The low voltage caused by a weak battery will cause abs to do strange things. If the alternator and battery are back up to speed then the alternator will keep it at an optimum level. If you find that the battery is getting drained at that point pull the fuse again.

Re: ABS and BAT light

I may do that just to see what happens. Now that i think about it the ABS light may have come on the last time the alt crapped out.Cant remember for sure though. If indeed there is a problem with it I'll yank the fuse again.I plan on getting rid of it in spring anyway.
