Unhappy e39 tail light indicator on dash

Hello.
I just purchased a '97 528i (it only had 48k mi ). The issue I'm having is the dash light is telling me that there is a problem with the tail lights. (both rear indicators are on) But when I check the lights, they all work fine. I tried changing them any way, but the warning lights stay on. Then on Saturday, they were off for a while. But by the afternoon, they were back on again. Is this a common problem? Any ideas what I can do to fix this? Could it be just too low wattage on the bulbs?
Thanks for any help.
SMc

Replace the third light bulb, which is on top of the rear dash, you can go through the trunk to get to it. Lots of people forget to check this third light a lot.....

Re: e39 tail light indicator on dash

Thanks Alex! That did the trick. Now I know that the third brake light is wired to the right tail light.

Glad to hear that it worked out for you. I like your "NEWBIE ANIMATION" and of course the puffing cigar one too very cute.....
