Halfords Aluminium Paint & Tamiya Compound

Hi Guys,

Had a read through the FAQ about polishing/compound on finished coat of car and still have a query for you all.

It states; for solid colours you rub in your compound after your finish coat (after leaving it for a couple of weeks of course!) and for METALLIC colours you should apply clear coat over the finish coat THEN rub with compound.

So, this is my query: I used Halfords Aluminium spray for my Peugeot 206 and thought my next thing was to rub compound and then wax it but after reading the FAQ I'm not so sure. IS the Halfords Aluminium classed as METALLIC? And if so, why do you have to clear coat it first and THEN rub in the compound.

Also, is clear coat the same thing as Gloss Varnish (which I have a bottle of)?

I've probably left myself open for abuse here for being so stupid but go ahead, mock me! (As long as you answer the queries also!!!)

Only thing why you have to clear coat metallic is that it has those tiny reflecting particals in it and you will rub them out if you don't clear coat. If your silver is solid colour without those particals you can rub it without clear coat on.

My paint does have reflecting particles so I guess I'll have to clear coat. Thank god I found out about that before using compound on it first!!!

Could you answer me one thing? Is clear coat the same thing as Gloss Varnish? (I only ask because I have a bottle of that already and will save me from forking out 'even more' money!)

Is it wood gloss varnish? If so this goes yellow over time. So I wouldn't use it. Tamiya clear coat will work, but you need an airbrush to apply the bottle clear.

They do a TS can, but I'm not sure if you can use it over halfords cans. I think you can. Haven't tried it yet. One of the more clued up can answer better for you.

Halford's clear lacquer works well on top of their auto paints. Polishes up well with Tamiya compound.

P.S. The Gloss Varnish I have was bought from a Model Shop but I may stop using this as it's paint on only. Mind you, it'll do for the smaller parts
