Running rich

I just bought a 94 blazer. It runs kind of rough and smells extremely rich. Any ideas? Also, did this come with a 700r4 tranny?

If its a CPI, engine code 'W', it has a modified version of the 700R4, called the 4L60E - the 'E' meaning it is an electroniclly controlled transmission. Again, if its a W engine with the good ol' CPI, most likely the injector spider unit, which you can find a wealth of information on here how to diagnose it and replace it. Common problem with the W engine. Congrats on your purchase, hope this helps.

I guess first of all, is the CPI unit a spendy one? Also, with the tranny, does that have to be a specific rebuild kit, or can it be the same as would be for a 93 blazer? It is the "w" code.

The '93 and '94 4L60E transmissions are identical. The '95 is different altogether. The '96 -'97 different, '98 on also different etc. CPI is for the most part reliable, the injector spider unit should be changed as a whole, although you can now get parts separately, its easier just to replace the whole thing. Make sure thats your problem first, as the part is a little expensive.

Re: Running rich

Take the Vortec plate off the top of the engine.

Under it is a round IMTV valve which you can remove. Make sure you remomber how it was orientated.

Take a flashlight and look down into the upper plenum and look for golden washed spots, fuel smell and pools of fuel.

Re: Re: Running rich

I saw a post earlier while searching through the archives about how to tell if the CPI is goping bad. So basically, if it is a gold color around it????

I forgot to mention in my last post. If the transmission is not shifting right, or is taking a long time to shift, its most likely casued by the fuel problem. When the injector went out on my '93, the computer was having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to correct the fuel curve, while trying to shift the transmission properly. Shift points are based on input values such as engine load, speed, etc. If thats all over the board because the engine is running bad, then the computer will not be able to shift the tranny properly, giving you a rough shifting tranny.

Re: Running rich

Actually, the only gear working right now is reverse. It almost seems like it wants to shift into a forward gear but will not. And my reverse lights are only working when it is in neutral. And the gear selector display is all misalligned. For instance when the tranny is in reverse, the indicator shows halfway between park and reverse, and neutral is right on reverse.
