Check Engine Light...And O2 Sensor

My father's 1997 GMC Sierra can't pass emissions because the CE light comes on, the Goodyear automotive service wants to charge him almost $500 dollars for a replacement, which is what he payed for the truck (it's his work truck his company decomissioned). Even after that they say it won't guarantee to pass emissions.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice that would help make replacing the part more affordable and get that light off. Thanks in advance.

First, do you have an Autozone or Checker nearby? If so take it there and have them read the Check Engine Soon light codes. They will tell you what needs to be replaced.

If it is an O2 sensor, then I believe there are 4 of them on our trucks, 2 on each exhaust side, 1 before and 1 after the catalytic converters. They are just resistors that change resistance with the oxygen content of the exhaust. If you disconnect 1 and check the resistance across the connections. Then compare it to all the others, you should be able to tell which one is bad. With good luck, you only have 1 bad one. Buy them from AZ and replace it. They just unscrew from the exhaust pipe they are mounted on.
