1997 stalls when idling

Anyone have/heard of this problem in a 1997 4cyl automatic? It stalls out (and is very difficult to restart) whenever I'm stuck in prolonged stop-go traffic. Thanks for your help!

Is this at normal temp or does it get hot. Does your car seem to be losing power at all?

running warm

This is usually after it's been driven for a while and always happens initially in stop-go traffic. After the first time it happens there is typically a loss of power as well as "hiccups" when accelerating.

Could be an ignition problem. How old are your spark plugs and wires? They may be the problem. Does it stall when you are stationary or when you go to move off? It could be a tranny issue but I doubt it! Also, how old is you fuel filter? This could also be the pronblem if not a contributing factor.

Re: 1997 stalls when idling

It usually stalls when idling, and I don't know if I mentioned this but it only seems to happen during warmer (60+) weather. Thanks for all your help!

I'd say fuel line then! Run some injector cleaner and the highest octane fuel you can get.

Just any from a reputable company like STP or similar. They're all pretty much the same. You can even shop by price if you want! I'm not sure how good the NOS on is but STP would probably be better anyway. I use STP or Pennzoil. If you buy a multipack you can do it for say 3 consecutive tankfuls and after the first you could probably go back to regular gas!

I think you mane the Torque Converter Clutch and if you disconnect this and It isn't the problem as shown it isn't you lose gas mileage on the highway!
