Pls help, heater fan problem

Could some one tell me what to do. I have 1996 chevy cavalier and my heater fan works only on the last one setting. The first three doesn't work. I read lot of posts and found good one but I can't find that box 2 by 2 inches.

This is that post:

The first one about fan speed, there is a square box, about 2 inches by 2 inches under the glove compartment against the firewall in the bottom of the fan motor housing, this box has 4 resistors epoxied on the board. There is one resister for each speed on the fan motor setting, 2 of the resistors have burnt out. This is pretty common with the Cavalier, I will be replacing my second one in 2 years in the near future. If you are flexible, and have small tools, it can be replaced in a few minutes without have to take tooo much stuff apart.

And just in case link:

OK what you'll have to do is get right up under the dash in the passenger side footwell. You will see a round thing. This is part of your heater. behind you will see a plug. This is attached to the box. It's gheld in by two bolts/screws. Good luck. It's best to sit 'upside down in the pass seat and rest your head way up in the foot well although don't do this too long or you'll pass out! Autozone apparently sell this. Just ask for the resistor for the heater fan. They should get your drift.

Good Luck

Thank you for advice. I just did it and it was really hard to do. I couldn't reach second screw. It was too close to wall. I found smallest tools and even then it was hard. So now I have some kind of white plastic which is holding green 2 by 2 chip. I couldn't find any resistors (I don't know how it spells, might be resister). Is that right stuff?

Thanks a lot.

The dark green looking pathways proivide the resistance and the main resistor is the piece of bent wire. That's what burns out! They don't use real resistor as they would last too long and then Delco would lose that revenue. They only cost probably about $2 to make. Our usually in Mexico but the one in My Dad's Grand Prix was made in Slovenia!!! That was different to ours it had real resistors!!! The broken one didn't though, just had pieces or nickel of different widths!!! It's GAY!!! They are designed to only last a short while!!!!

Thank you for your help. I'm going to buy it tomorrow. I hope Autozone or someone else has it. And I'm sure it will cost more than $10. Only one problem now, how will I screw it back. It is so uncomfortable place to do and so close to wall. I think at the worst I will screw it only on one screw which is not so close to wall. Hey BTW do you know why rear speakers may not work. I didn't look yet why they don't work but they suddenly stoped. Might be there are some fuses?

Thank you for your time and I appreciate your help!!!

Mine's in by only one screw. I smashed the old one apart so I could get at the rear screw with a 4" adjustable wrench! No way was that back one going back in! Goog luck putting it in. although it's not that hard now you know how it came out. I felt ill for hours after doing it. I dropped the backrest of the seat took off my shoes and laid upside down in the footwell. MY head was spinning!!! Not nice. Bloody GM and their counterpart AC Delco!

Ok, I'm done. I bought that resistor in Autozone and it cost me $21. And it made in Mexico. I put it on one screw as I told, because it is impossible reach second one. And I did exactly like you have done. I laid upside down and after I spent 15 or 20 minutes my head was killing me. Also it is terribly cold outside even in the garage. Thanks god there are such a things like flashlight. It helped little bit. So thank you and take care.

P.S. I will let you know if I find out what happened with my rear speakers.

I have similar issues....

1. Blower works only on 2 highes settings. (first 2 settings don't work)
2. Rear speakers work intermittently for a little while, then out for weeks. I can't seem to isolate the problem.

Some other threads also record these 2 same problems together. I wonder if there is a common underlying issue at hand causing these failures.

I will take your previously posted remedies in consideration for the blower as it sounds identical to yours, but if anyone can provide advice on the rear speaker issue your help will be appreciated.
