Only two settings working on the blower motor

I have a 98' intrigue and the blower motor is only working on the Highest setting and the the 3rd highest setting....The other 4 settings nothing happen. Its a manual tempature control. I've read a quite a few posts here about this problem...What should I look at first...Resistor? Blower motor? Fuse box? Fuse under passenger carpet?

Definetly the Resistor. you obviously have burnt out all but one of them on the part. The High doesn't go through the resistor.

So is this a job that someone with not a whole lot of mechanical skills could do?

Yeah it's pretty simple. All you need is a 1/4" drive rachet w/ extension and I think an 8mm or 10mm socket. You might need a universal.

I took the fan motor out from under the pass side of dash. then the part you are looking for is up against the firewall going up into the air ductwork. I had a difficult time getting the bolts in and out because of the padding on the firewall. In fact I ended up leaving one bolt out because I coulding get it back in. Also expect to have to lie upside down.

My old part looked charred and the dealer gave me a new redesigned part.

The intrigue also has an option for a "cabin air filter" which filters the air coming from outside. The dust is usually what burns resistors out. Although this is a badly designed part. You can get the filter from NAPA for cheap. You put it in from the outside P.S. below the windshield. Some cars came with them all of the intrigues can have them put in.

I put the resistor in today and wow was that hard to do....Like you said about that back bolt, I didn't even try to get that back in. Turned the car on and bam all settings work on the heater now.......

One little problem, When I was bolting the blower motor back on, one of the bolts I tightened to much and broke it. Now I can't get a bolt in that spot and there's air escaping there. I'm thinking about drilling a new hole right next to the old one and putting a screw in there....Good idea or not?

I Forgot weather or not the resistor assembly had a seal on it. You should be alright just thowing a screw in there. But I don't konw how things are orientated in there. you might drill into the heater core by accident and then you will have a major problem.

If you want to be safe, I would get some RTV silicone from the parts store and (your gonna hate this part) take the part back out. apply a generous amount of RTV on the sealing area. put it on the part not the hole so you don't accidentally get it on the resistors. Put the screws in that you still have. You might be able to take out the screw you broke off and you will get a better seal. If you can't you will need to prop up the part against the ductwork w/ something like a snowbrush.

The silicone will take from 6 to 24 hours depending on the temperature. Warmer the better.

I got the resistor back in with just one bolt, I'm not worried about that...What I was talking about was the actual Blower Motor...When I was putting that back in at the end, one of the screws that hold that to the housing broke off and now there's air leaking out a little bit....I'm still getting plenty of air from the vents when I need it though.

Oh, sorry. Yeah that sounds fine. Just make sure you don't hit the impeller or anything else.
