97 passat 1.8t 20v high emissions and fluctuating rev counter

hi there
having probs with my 97 passat 1.8T 20valve .. my friend has had a look at it and plugged into the ecu ..shows up faults all way through .. emissions are high below 1600 rpm ..( blue smoke ) idling speed fluctuates .. hes getting a sensor ..temp one i think but is a bit at sea becuase it could be any one of the half dozen or so sensors and hopes replacing them in a process of eliminination will get it right .. just wondered if anyone has had similiar problems or could help ?.. thanks in advance

Write all the codes down for reference, clear them all, then see which come back. Address those first.
