99 Jeep Cherokee Stalling

I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee where the engine is running strong with no hesitation. The stalls happen suddenly as I am driving and I noticed it usually happens when the gas tank is 1/4 quarter full. The car starts right up and I don't need to push on the gas to keep it going. I've looked to replace the fuel filter but everything seems to be located in the gas tank. Does anyone have this problem or have any suggestions?

Sounds like a pump rpblem starting. If its only happening at 1/4 tank than I would ope n up your tank and see whats up. May have lost he strainer, or there might be some crude in there. How many miles do you have on your XJ. At 98K my 00' has had zero fuel problems.

There is a fuel filter, however it is not a changable unit. Its part of the fuel pump assembly.

Is it possible the main fuel line and the return fuel line at the tank have been mixed up?I know on mine the return on the fuel only goes so far into the tank and if the lines were switched Id only be able to suck 1/4 of gas out of the tank.

Hey, Does your jeep stall when the RPMs are high? or does it only stall when you are slowing down or stopped?

IS YOURS A GRAND CHEROKEE OR JUST THE CHEROKEE DALE

I had the same problem on mine. Replace the crankshaft position sensor (CPS). It is located where the extension pipe runs off the exhaust manifold. This is a common problem with Cherokees. It has nothing to do with fuel level.

Before you go removing the tank, get the fuel system pressure checked.

What's that CPS unit worth, I have a 99 xj with 84,000kms on it and it stalled on me at about an eighth of a tank and when turning left. Sounds like it could be the same thing to me

My CPS costed $45, not sure if the year of the model matters though, mines a 90.

Dale, did you replace the crankshaft position sensor? I'm having similar problems with my 97 Grand Cherokee and saw the note by tblack.

First you should have the fuel pressure checked, that way you can narrow the problem to fuel system. The crank sensor is located on the drivers side on the bellhousing. Are you having fuel problems or a stalling problem. give me a holler at [email protected] DALE
