Tranny Slippage on 1999 LTZ

I have been driving the wife’s 1999 3.8 LTZ this week and on occasion notice a little slippage/chatter in first gear. If I accelerate smoothly, I don’t notice the problem. If I accelerate a little harder, I notice the slippage/chatter sometimes. It reminds my of the traction control issue I had a while back. Sometimes the traction control light came on. I had it in the shop for the rear brake lights. The service manager said a high pressure code in the transmission was set but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. He checked because I asked about the traction control. Is there a service bulletin for this or am I getting ready to have a transmission repair bill? I am thinking the latter. Anyway, I don't notice any burnt smell in transmission. I change fluid at recommended times. Fluid is normal on dip stick. No leaks. I have right about 98K on the car now.

Tread left on those tires, sport? Maybe you're jerkin' 'em loose?

Not sure. First is usually pretty solid on these.

Re: Tranny Slippage on 1999 LTZ

Last time I looked there was tread. :-)

It's odd, that's why I noticed it. I still think that traction control has something to do with it.

We will keep the maintenance up and keep driving until it fails. If I have to, I'll do the tranny. By then my daughter can drive it. Should be an excellent car for her to get used to driving.

Take care!

Does the trac control on yours take over throttle application on sensing wheelspin? Mine doesn't do that, but I've driven ones (Vette, etc) that had that capability. Kinda a strange sensation.

I found a TSB about this problem. It is not uncommon, apparently.

My 98 LTZ has always done that. The dealer was never able to find anything wrong with the trans. If I accelerate too quickly after engaging it into gear, it will occur. The car has 106,000 miles on it and it never got any worse. Seems to be characteristic of this engine/trans. I thought I read something on this forum about a pressure solenoid? that may cause it? can't recall...

Re: Tranny Slippage on 1999 LTZ

That pretty much describes it. I do have traction control. While at the dealer, they did see a transmission code. I don't recall what it was except something to do with high pressure. The engine light did come on. That was over a year and a half ago. I rarely drive it and have not experienced the slippage the last few times I drive it. I do feel some h ard shifting on occasion and a high pitched whine. I change fluid and filter about every 30K. This just turend over 100K. I will probably have dealer flush the power steering and transmission to remove all of the old fluid and replace.

Once or twice I've stomped down on it too soon after putting it in drive, like when executing a quick 3 point u-turn in the middle of the street, and have gotten that really tremendous clutch pack shudder because it wasn't fully engaged. Is that what you guys are talking about?

Cuz if so, that's not the car's fault. That's us being impatient
