Angry Window Tinting on Side Rear Windows

I recently was cited by VA State police for illegally tinted side windows in my four year old Chrysler PT cruiser. I have not modified this car in any way since purchase. When I asked the officer who cited me if this means that all PT Cruisers are illegal in the state of Virginia he replied "yes, until they change the law". I went to a glass shop to get my windows replaced and they said the only replacement would be the same "courtesy tint". Chrysler says this car meets all state laws. The court wants me to come into compliance by February 10, 2005. I have no way of coming into compliance. All new vehicles on lots seem to have even more tint than I have. Second citation would be $500 fine and two points. Chrysler customer relations does not answer after several 1 hour call waiting. Virginia law says 35% and Chrysler has already said they are 20-25% standard!! What's going on here??

have you tried going back to the pt cruiser dealer and having them replace the factory tint to just light tint or just a regular glass and having the tint done yourself like at a tint shop, perhaps at a light tint of 10-15%?

Re: Window Tinting on Side Rear Windows

Go see a lawyer. The 35% tinting law applies to cars. The PT Cruiser is technically a light truck and conforms to the laws for light trucks and multipurpose vehicles. MPV and light trucks can have any level of tint on back side and back windows according to the VA law.
