2000 528i idle problem

in the mornings since it has been getting colder...my engine idles fine...but every so often it will drop from 800 down to 500. on few occasions it has dropped low enough to stall out. it seems to only do this when its cold. once it's warmed up...everything is fine. i tried looking for vacuum leaks but couldn't seem to find any. i only have 65k on it. i heard there was a recall on the pcv but models from 98 thru 03/00...and mine is 07/00. if anyone experienced and fixed this problem...please...enlighten me on what im missing

Have you had the Insp II service done yet or has the 'Service Engine Soon' warning come on?

Not sure what a Insp II is...but I don't think so. No check engine light either.

Re: 2000 528i idle problem

The most common failure causing your symptom is one of the cam position sensors but this will eventually trip the "Service Engine Soon" lamp.

Re: 2000 528i idle problem

I also have a 2000 528i and have the same identical problem. Did you ever find the solution? I never got it "checked out."

It doesn't bother me that much except when I go outside and start er' up in the morning and go back inside, sometimes it stalls out.

I don't have any service lights on and I did have a cam sensor replaced about seven months ago. I doubt it was that.

Re: Re: 2000 528i idle problem

I had the same problem, fortunately during the warranty period. The normal computer diagnostics did not reveal anything wrong. Eventually, the dealership solved the problem by resetting the computer. That was it!! No parts were replaced.

Hope this helps all those who have run into this problem.

Re: 2000 528i idle problem

Did anyone try the "reset the computer" solution for the cold idling and stalling problem? How much do mechanics charge for resetting the relevant computer? (I am all thumbs when it comes to doing it myself.) My car is giving me the same problem again after a break of 2 or 3 years. This time it is past the warranty stage.

Re: 2000 528i idle problem

Probally idle control valve. Sits directly above the throttle housing. Usually gets carbon clogging over time and if you are able to remove it, wiggle it left to right and you should hear it opening and closing freely. If not, it is probally on it's way out.

Re: 2000 528i idle problem

I have a 1999 528i and had the same problem with the colder weather. It was in my case the (mass air sensor)...........replaced it and never had the problem again thus far.
