Question Car Running..Not Good..?

Hey guys, i got a simple question for you, actually 2...

My bud was telling me that it's not good for you to leave your car idling for a while-it does cause wear in the engine from not being driven..and wastes gas to..??? Is that true, cause now that i think of it, i must have my car idling in park for like 2 hours a day. I get my coffee in the morning..chill for like 40-60 mins in my car listening to tunes... Other various "in park" but engine running moments..and usually AGAIN if i get fast food, and i'm eating in my car (bad habit..i know)..

The second question, i remember reading somewhere that someone said it's good for your car if you take it up to high speeds once in a while to clean the...?? Forgot, it had something to do with the fuel and the exhaust or something. I usually take my car up to atleast 65 everyday on the highway, occasionally 103 (this is when my speed limiter kicks in) when theres no one around..and only myself to be killed..

Re: Car Running..Not Good..?

You are fine. The newer cars do not carbon up as bad as older carburated models from idleing. Besides any build up would be blown out on your 65 mph highway drive.

Yeah, idling used to foul up the plugs (well...on my dad's old 911S, anyway)...
Nowadays, it doesn't hurt anything, unless your radiator fan doesn't work...
I use the excuse of blowing the carbon out of the system every once in a while, just to make some WOT runs...

Speed limiter?
Was the speed limiter present when you bought the car, or did you add it yourself? And if it was present, was this just an "idea" of your cars brand, or any kind of law that forces speed limiters in your country? And if so, can these devices be removed? They are driving me crazy.

Most all of the new ECM cars have speed and/or RPM limiters built into the engine management systems. Yes, they can be removed via chip re-burning or aftermarket chips.

Re: Car Running..Not Good..?

Most can be removed...ALOT of others have speed limiters so you don't die basically.

My 95 ford tbird can easily make it to 120/130. BUT, ford made these cars with really WEAK driveshafts-it's aparent when your doing 90-103 mph, you'll get vibration from the shaft-NOT GOOD. Plus, when these cars left the factory, they got tires rated at 118 mph.

So basically, if i took off my limiter, with a chip, and attempted to do 130-i'd have to tell my family to make the funeral arrangements :-)

Man, what are you saying? Nobody is going to die if he doesn't have a speed limiter. But running without the speed limiter is something that I consider as basic rights of a driver: To drive his car and choose the driving way by himself. It doesn't mean that if he has no speed limiter he will be running; it just means that the speed will be defined by him. Clean & clear.

Speed limiters IMO, are just another step in the direction of containing the peoples freedom, so that accidents/crimes & illegal actions are contained as well. I am against it. All these "accidents" are just things people will have to live with and I hate being turned to a "laws robot" or something because some people think in this way.

Orion,

Have you considered the fact that most people drive like idiots? There are no roads here in america that have a speeed limit anywhere near the limiter of most vehicles. Just because someone wants to play with vehicular homicide doesn't mean i want to be the victim. Not to mention that the liscensing process here in th US is crap. How many people do know that shouldn't have liscences but still do?

In more simple words, what I want to say is this: Is 1, 2..10 accidents over the year a reason "worthy enough" for banning aggressive driving that is a hobbie for so many people?
Whoever I've been asking this question to, said me that YES, it far more than is (especially in my country that roads suck). My opinion though, is no, it is not. IMO all people that consider thenselves "drivers" should drive in a wise way for themselves, if they are worried about car accidents, rather than moan about the way others drive.

As a person that loves aggressive driving and hates freedom limitations, there is one thing that I'd love the goverments to do, but they don't: Build cars that will have a limited ability for a top speed, rather than a high speed ability and a speed limiter. Because there is nothing special about speed, but about accelaration & "flat out" driving. However, accelerating in a high way is also "illegal", regardless the speed you will reach. And why? Just because some people don't even like the sight of it.

Re: Car Running..Not Good..?

Actually, no, my driveshaft will most likely snap in half and it would kill me.

THATS why the limiter is there, these cars aren't designed for 110+....the supercoupes on the other hand are..
