Please Help Me Asap!!!!

i have a 93 chevy Lumina (4 Door sadan). not sure whats wrong with it . but this is how it acts when it acts up. it idels good when sitting, when you go down the highway a little ways it stats to jerk and i mean like someone is stomping on ther drakes then it dies. i go to restart it some times it starts up fine and some time i have to wait a minute or too. i was told to check the fuel filter, EGR Valve, to check to see if its getting gas (witch if it wasnt it wouldnt idel while sitting) the crank sencer, and a few other things. Im hopeing you guys here can help i only have today and tomarrow to get this car going before my wife has to be back at work and this is the only car we have. thanks for your time and help.

Re: Please Help Me Asap!!!!

Doesn't really sound like an egr valve to me. And yes, if it idles fine, then makes no sense to think it is fuel related. Um try replacing plug wires, and plugs. It might be as simple as that. I'm leaning towards a spark/ignition issue. Ignition module, coil packs, cam and crank position sensors. When it doesnt restart right away, how does it crank, does it almost fire, and then stumble and die? Or does it just keep cranking and cranking and not turn over at all? I need a few more details. Good luck

Sounds like crank sensor and / or ignition module. Very common problem items on these cars. Crank sensor failry cheap, ignition module around 80-100 bucks. The ignition module sits under your coil packs (it is flat) and can be tested at most part's stores. Would be interesting to see if you have any trouble codes stored in the computer.

The only other thing I know of that acts up when warm is TCC solenid which will cause your car to jerk and stall at stop signs etc. Usually this happens and the car starts back up OK and then stalls again as soon as put into ANY gear. When it cools down it works OK for a while. If it is carrying on while driving I would bet on the crank sensor or the ignition pack. Have seen them BOTH need replacing at the same time. Good luck!

Re: Please Help Me Asap!!!!

yeah, does the problem trip the check engine light? have autozone plug a scan tool in. Granted it is a 1993, so it will be OBD1, or you can check for codes by yourself with a paperclip. there are manuals all over the net. If you get any fault codes, it might help in narrowing the problem down. let us know

3.1L V6 is the motor. and yes the check engine soon light finally kicked on. I took it to Auto Zone and it came up as code 42 i think if i remember right lol. Anyways it came up as the IGNITION CONTROL MODULE. $99.99 to fix it . its just to bad the the parts from my 88 Beretta wouldnt work LMAO. anyways thanks for the help and the time to put up with me .

Re: Re: Please Help Me Asap!!!!

ok im here to bug you again. i had a macanic down here. and i told him what it was doing. i also told him that auto zone said it was a code 42 witch in the IGNITION CONTROL MODULE. and hes said it could also be the crank sensor he also said that if it was the crank sensor it wouldnt have been a code 42. but that it still could be the problem. hes got me all kinds of confused now. he said only way to find out is take it to a GM delear and have it put on a scanner. but how can it be the crank senser if it comes up to be a code 42. can anyone explane this to me please.

he also said if it was the IGNITION CONTROL MODULE that it would take longer then a minute or 2 for it to cool down so the car will start. well if it was the crank senser would it take longer for it too cool off since it goes in to the crank case where all the heat is?

Re: Please Help Me Asap!!!!

I still think its the ignition module. Just rip the module out, and take it (the module itself) to autozone to have it checked out. They should be able to tell you if its good or not.
