Short Circuit in block heater?

Hey all.
If I had a heated shop or warmer weather to work in I could probably figure this one out with some investigation of my own:
I suspect I have a short circuit in my 1997 3.0 Sable GS's block heater. Every time I try to plug it in on a cold night the breaker for the corresponding outlet flips 'off' inside the house! Anyone ever heard of this? I'd really like to know if someone else has had this happen before letting my mechanic start his clock when I take it in for the fix.
The block heater worked flawlessly last winter. The extension cord I am using is the proper grade. Any help/advice is appreciated!
(p.s. - 5 months until summer!)
