Re: 4X4 problems

When you replaced the bearing did you torque it properly? (180 ft pounds preload) Secondly, to check if you are actually in 4wd is to throw it in 4wd then drive in a tight circle in wheel lock and see if you hump the road. If you're not, your front diff isn't engaging.

Re: 4X4 problems

If you don't torque it to 180ft punds you will end up destroying the bearings fairly quickly...

It's not true... You can run the nut on past the cotter pin and be at less then 100 ft pounds, who ever told you that was an idiot...

You're not gonna know until that hub is properly torqued down....

Do I understand this right, did you use your truck in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement?

If you did you can really strain your trucks drive system and do a lot of damage. This might have caused some of your problems.

I only use 4x4 when I need it, and I haven't needed it yet this winter.

If you are hearing a noise that sounds like a single engine airplane and then a clunk, you are hearing the front differential disengaging. Check your vacuum switch on the transfer case.

If you have a mechanics mirror or similar, start the vehicle and put it into 4WD. Use the mirror to look under the battery tray at the actuator. Look to see if the rubber diaphragm is pulled back. If it is, the front axle is locked, if it's not, you don't have vacuum to (probably) it. I would just swap the switch out, it is very common and not expensive, under $20. It is located on the top of the transfercase on the driver's side. It will have a connector with three vacuum hoses on it. When reinstalling, make sure you have it keyed correctly.
