1997 Ford Explorer XLT V8 EGR VAlve

Is there a tool to remove and replace the egr valve or do you have to remove the whole engine or take it to the dealership? My check engine message is replace egr valve but I can't get to it. Help!

There is not an exact tool to replace the egr valve you're referring to on your 5.0L explorer, but ive found a crows foot socket to be most useful in the tight quarters, just out of curiousity, what trouble code do you have, its possible that you have an egr code and the valve is not at fault, let me know.

The code reads that the egr valve is bad. But a mechanic told me that it might not be that, that maybe I could clean out around the housing in front of it because it might not be getting good vacumn?

You have to remove the upper intake manifold to replace the EGR valve. Most repair shops will quote 6-8 hours. I did it in about 3 hours. If you do this make sure you mark your vacum lines and be careful not to break any lines.
