swapping to a 04 cdplayer

I have a 02 chevy ext cab with the base option cd player and single round door speakers not the long steel screen covered ones as there is no way to make this work with the manual window handle in the way.
WILL a 04 cd player work in an 02 pickup. I know the 04 reads vin number and what not. can it be programmed cheaply to work in an 02. I"m trying to get better sound. right now i'm thinking about replacing the door speakers(hopefully not hard). and hooking my pioneer amp and two 10's up. maybe.

I talked to a dealership and they said it would fit in but the 02's pcm would not give a vin reading to an 04 deck. is there any thing to get by this. Stupid electronics.
