1999 Main Rear Engine seal leaking??

I need some help. I have, you guessed it, a 1999 Cherokee Sport which I love with all of my heart. It's my baby and I have never had anything major wrong with it all since I bought it brand new. About 1200 miles ago I took it in for an oil change and three days ago my check gauges light comes on so I check my oil and to my amazement NO OIL. Take it back to the oil change place and they tell me it's my main rear engine seal that's leaking and I'll have to take it somewhere else to get it fixed because the transmission has to be moved to get to it. Fear has the best of me and I am curious how much something like this should cost me to get fixed. I would like an idea before I go in and talk to the fools and they try to feed me some crap. Please if anyone has any idea I'd greatly appreciate it.

Re: 1999 Main Rear Engine seal leaking??

ok first of all,the trans does not have to be removed because your jeep has a 2 piece rear main seal.the oil pan needs to be removed.i have never seen a rear main seal suddenly develop a leak so severe that it loses all the oil in 1200 miles.anything is possible ,I guess.what I have seen is a lot of these places like Goofy Lube have inexperienced people doing oil changes and calling themselves technicians, and when they take the oil filter off of a 4.0,they break the oil sending unit,or they just dont put enough oil in.anyways,I would say that if you aren't mechanically inclined,it would probably be a good idea to get it looked at by someone else.If it is the rear main seal,it will set you back a few hundred.but it could be something simple.but if its losing oil that fast, you should get it fixed asap

Thank you very much for the link, it's incredible!! I am not the most mechanically inclined but at least I can get somewhat of an idea before I go in and they start feeding me the BS.

Thank you SO much for your response!! Since I posted my question I have had a couple of people take a look and they said the exact same thing as you did. Since I added oil it hasn't leaked a drop so I'm guessing your Goofy Lube sceanrio was correct. I am taking it in to one last place this week to get it checked out and cleaned up. Thanks again!!
