What is the first thing that you should add to mod your car

I'm looking for a fairly cheap mod that will boost performance. I have heard that a K&N air filter will add 18 hp, and they are fairly cheap, aren't they?

18 hp to a 1990 oldsmobile? I don't think so , i don't think that it will add so much to any car... A real racing intake with cone filter and intake in the hood , with mods under the hood to keep the air getting into the filter the coldest possible... If we're talking about turbo cars then any boost controller will do the job...

I agree. Get a K&N filter anyhow. Jut for the fact that you won't have to buy another air filter. That is the only reason I bought one. I have been hearing a lot about this Tornado device th8at you put in your air system that has been proven to give up to 25HP on certain cars. They have a list of what kind of increase you can expect on some common cars. Hell I added 19HP to a newer Chevy Impalla.

Also you might want to get yourself a cold ari intake. The colder the air the more power you have.

do the air cleaner assembly up with K&N, and re do your exhaust system.... that doesn't just mean a new muffler and tip. to take full advantage of airflow, and reduced backpressure, put in header(s), mandrel bent headpipe(s), hi flow cats if applicable, mufflers, and tailpipes. mufflers and a tip alone don't realy do a whole lot if you're still using factory 2", 1 3/4" or worse pipes and manifold ahead of it.

As has been mentioned above, I’d go with a new exhaust system and a pod filter. I’ve got a 3” catless exhaust and a Trust Airinx pod on my Skyline and it goes like stink!

Lol, its a Skyline FTO, thats what they do

ANy how, I agree with everyone else, let your engine breath better with pod filter, intake, downpipe. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I'd do it in this order:

Air Filter
Intake
Downpipe (If you have a precat)
Exhaust, either high flow cat or no cat.

Also you might want to consider performance pullies, sounds silly but it helps a little

True, but my FTO also went HEAPS better when I put a new exhaust and pod filter on it.

I'd imagine so, did you do anything else to the FTO?

Nope, that was about it. I was thinking about headers as some are in the process of being produced for the FTO, but I bought the Skyline before I got around to it. The only other thing I did was add a front strut bar.

If you want to stay cheap you should change the air intake and put a cold air sys with a k&n. And put a cat back. All this should give you maybe up to 20HP. best would be to change the headers but that is more expensive.

yeah living in the states theres a lot of stuff you can't do especially in California (those guys get screwed) I did however read somewhere that removing the c-converter actually lowered hp and torque a small amount (about 3 points a piece, barely noticeable) I stayed legal and went the high flow route for the converter I bought a Catco one it has really low restriction I think it was fiber glass lined (like a big glasspack) It all burned up pretty fast and now the car is even louder than when I first put it on.

No problems with it here either , i know a lot pepole who have straight pipes on a Vw polo 1,4 75 hp 4 banger and think they're all that , i was once driving with a guy , we were driving back 500 km in 30 hours... man , he has straight pipes on his corolla (euro model , WRC - like) his corolla has a 2.0 turbo engine and 4WD in this , but there was so much snow that we had to go 20-40 kmh all the time , and i thought i'll be deaf after this trip , this kind of exhaust is really annoying on long trips...
