Re: vtec for non vtec. need help

The d15b7 motor is a non-vtec motor, it's from a DX or LX. The d16z6 is the '92-'95 vtec motor. And if you got that yes you would have to have the ECU (some people hook it up to an RPM switch or something to get it to work). And you would need to run vtec for the motor to run correctly, again if you have the d16z6.

Yeah the previous owner could have put the d16z6 (vtec motor) head onto the block. Personally I wouldn't trust a motor that had a head swap like that, unless I knew the person who did it; but that's just me. You never know what the person did.

Re: vtec for non vtec. need help

Check the engine stamp. If it says D15B(no number at the end) it's probably the JDM D15 which is VTEC, if not it might be a mini-me.

There is a possibility that they had just switched valve covers too, but I don't know if a VTEC head's valve cover is any different than a non-VTEC head's valve cover.

The heads on the non-vtec vs vtec are different I believe. I believe the plugs are on the other side on the vtec engine.

Yeah the spark plugs as well as the oil filler cap are on the opposite side of the non-vtec ones. Vtec, the plugs are in the front, non-vtec they are in the back.

D15b1 isn't a VTEC.

No one even mentioned that motor. And of course it's not, because it's an '88-'91 motor and vtec didn't come out for the D's until '92.

That's what I meant, I was just too lazy to scroll up to the top and see what the #s were after D15.

Re: vtec for non vtec. need help

Then it could be the jdm d15b vtec engine. Check to see where the spark plugs and oil cap are on the motor to know for sure.
