Cool Yanked My Silencer..

Today i had some free time, plus it wasn't to cold out. Anyways, i took out my air silencer on my 95 4.6L. It was easy to get out, and i didn't have to go nuts, just remove 2 screws under the bumper to wiggle out the silencer.

The only thing i notice-and this seams like a good thing, is that the air intake housing before the throttle body is under less stress. Before, if i revved the engine-moving the throttle arm, the intake housing would move slightly-almost like it was NOT able to suck in the air, and basically moved to counteract this. NOW it doesn't move at all, it seams as if AIR gets sucked in EASIER, which is a plus.

Beside that, i really don't notice squat, no sound, no power etc. Actually though, the throttle response seams a HAIR bit quicker-most likely my imagination.

Either way, this mod is easy, free, and helps the engine breath in better-even if it doesn't give more HP, it's worth it.

PS, maybe i don't hear a differance because of my choped mufflers

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

I can't notice ANY sound because when you have no mufflers, it's pretty dominating. If i open the hood, and rev it with the throttle arm..i hear no differance either, just the fact that the entire intake construction looks to be under less stress to get the air in.

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

on my v6 it made a huge difference in the intake sound. It made it Much deeper, kind of like the sound when you hear air flowing into a vacuum when you put your hand near it... I dont know.. stupid explanation. I felt that my car was just the slightest tiniest bit peppier as well. Did you try revving the engine really high, like to about 4000 RPM? Thats when I noticed the biggest difference in sound.

I was planning on taking the silencer out of my 93 5LHO but I thought you more or less had to take the wheel and splash guard out to get at the silencer. I took my mufflers off also and was hoping more than anything to get a little more sound out of the front and not just the rear.
Can you give me a little more detail on what you did to pull yours out.

Well, for a 93 5.0 i believe the silencer is bigger, maybe box shaped, whereas a 95 4.6 is basically just a plastic 90degree elbow.

Go to www.tccoa.com and search in the forums, YOU WILL definetly find what you need. If your silencer is big-you might have to jack her up and do the whole 9 yards-either way a simple job.

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

Not sure on the 5.0s if it even has an air silencer, but on the cars that I've done, I've never had to take off the wheel. It just makes it easier if you do. Definitely not required, though.

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

I would think it might give you like 3, maybe.

This mod is pretty much the same as going from a stock air filter-to a high flow k&n-more air. At first-i didn't notice to much of a differance. But after a couple days, you start to feel it-especially from a dead stop-and you floor it, thats where i feel a slight better push.

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

BTW, anyone here that has a KN filter...or is gonna buy one. MAKE SURE thye filter doesn't have to much oil on it-especially after you clean it.

This contributed to my maf sensor getting oil on it-and attracting MORE DIRT. I didn't even clean mine either, i had the panel filter for not even 3 months....

Die K&N die... :-)

Re: Yanked My Silencer..

You're highly unlikely to see 5hp. Even 3hp. 1 is a safe estimate.
